Troop: Spread My Wings (1989)

To he honest, when I was a kid, I liked this song, but I didn’t really become attached to it until college. By that time, I guess, I’d started to realize that people don’t really dance anymore, and that New Jack Swing played a large part in the creation of physical movements that I love. More importantly, hints of finding love and self-discovery pepper the song. Really, that’s what the whole song is about: discovering that folks have to embrace love of self in order to find the freedom and fullness life has to offer.

Between all that, and the ’90s beach scene, sepia tones, and classy lady (I gotta get my hair done like that), both the song and video make my heart want to break through my chest.

This morning, I’m in a gracious space. A colleague-come-friend has agreed to be an accountability partner — a real one; not a mouth-runner. He’s a creative go-getter, and I’m grateful that we’ve come together to get out our dreams (g.o.o.d. – oh yes I did!). I hope this all works out.

“And my heart will beat
The pathway
Searchin’ for a love
That lasts
Forevermore”

Enjoy,
Kenisha
