Product Review: African Black Soap @ Dr. Lemmon’s Guud Stuff

For as long as I’ve been in Oakland, D’Angelo–owner of Dr. Lemmon’s Guud Stuff–has been engaged in several entrepreneurial efforts and in activities related to preserving the economic viability of Black folks. Some years ago, he started a pop-up market, where he sells more than just Black-made products. Socks, toothpaste, incense, peroxide, toilet paper, dish soap, lotion: you need, he’s got it. Luckily, for me, he sells Black soap. That’s what I needed, so that’s what I got.

Prices are not marked on all items, so you may have to ask about the prices of specific items, like the black soap. Also, all items may not be visible, but that’s okay. D’angelo invites customers to come into his area to take a look at the merchandise table at the back of his stand.

I don’t remember seeing the soap, so I asked about it. Sure enough, he had some in stock, and quoted me $10 for the pound. He also offered to cut the block in half, and charge half price: $5. I knew I would need an entire pound, so I asked for a whole block. I can’t remember if I paid with cash or by card, but I do remember that D has the ability to accept both payment types.

Customer Service5
D’angelo is kind and attentive. He talks to customers. When you approach his shop, if he’s speaking with someone, he’s okay with you politely interrupting to get your needs met.

Product(s) – 5
It’s as potent as any other legitimate black soap. The lather is rich, and it’s effective at keeping me clean. It’s good for getting pit stains out of shirts, too. Don’t ask how I know.

Product Usability – 5
I bought a whole, uncut block, which can be a pain, but that’s on me. D’angelo will cut the block up for you, but I opted out.

Each third lasts for about a month, so I had to whip out a knife and cut three sections. It wasn’t difficult.

That was three months ago, so you know it’s time for me buy another block. Let me go on get my ten dollars together.

That’s it. Bye.
